Jean-Pierre WARNIER holds a Ph.D in anthropology (Univ. Of Pennsylvania) and a State doctorate in ethnology (Paris X, Nanterre). He has been a professor of ethnology at the Université René Descartes Paris V since 1985 and is a member of the research unit on “Languages, Music, and Societies,” in which he leads the research group called Matière à Penser (MàP). The majority of his research deals with Africa (history and economic anthropology, political hierarchies) and the praxeological approach to sensori-motricity and material culture in analyzing political organization and various social practices. In a continuation of his work on the Mankon Kingdom in Cameroon (research begun at the time of his thesis), Jean-Pierre Warnier is preparing a book entitled “Le Roi-pot. Corps, Culture Matérielle et Technologies du Pouvoir.”

In this interview, Jean-Pierre Warnier briefly discusses his academic background in anthropology. takes us through the different stages in his professional background, from the time he finished his studies until his retirement. He talks about his experience in teaching and academic administration in Nigeria and France. After he explains the influence of British social anthropology on political anthropology and discusses the relationship between regional trading systems and the construction of a community’s political history. He explains the origin and the objective of the research group called “Matière à Penser” (Food for Thought) and discusses how he analyzes material culture via an approach based on the "sign".
