Sophie ERNST :
Artist, Netherlands

ERNST Sophie is a visual artist based in the UK. She was born in Munich, Germany and grew up in the Netherlands. She trained as an industrial mechanic with BMW before graduating from the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. After graduation, she worked as Assistant Professor at the Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan from 2003 to 2007, where she started the HOME project. HOME is a long-term project that explores the notion of “elsewhere” and “ideal space”.
In about 40 conversations, artists, writers, academics, filmmakers, architects are remembering places and homes they or their parents left behind during the Partition of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947, the Palestinian Naqba in 1948 and the expulsion of Iraqi Jews between 1948 and 1951. The HOME project looks at personal memory of space and the political dimension of remembering.  www.sophieernst.nl
